“Right Below, Suitable Now IV” lives in the space of teenage fantasy. The college-much less, mum or dad-a lot less, unsupervised, unedited, uninhibited room exactly where just about anything feels doable. With Craig’s deployment on the horizon, the teenagers conspire to send him off with terrific fanfare. A raucous sport of paintball provides way to a spontaneous marriage ceremony that offers way to a complete evening of drunk and delirious partying and sexual intercourse. There’s a feral flexibility to it all. The people cannot be contained, can’t stay continue to. They thrash and they undress and they consume and they wipe out. It is intoxicating. But it is also nearly unnatural. It’s cautiously crafted chaos. And that helps make it additional of a spectacle than an true emotion.

Perhaps the pointlessness of their destruction and debauchery is just the issue. But take for example the shot of a wedding ceremony dress hanging from the again of a lawn mower. It caps off a collection of pictures of the teens’ shoes and garments strewn all close to the family vacation property they’ve damaged into following Craig and Valentina have their past-moment “Hawaiian-themed” wedding day at the chapel on base. Valentina’s low-cost wedding ceremony dress—purchased with income pooled by the entire crew at the PX—waves in the breeze, draped across the take care of of a lawn mower as the sunshine dips. It’s a attractive shot. But it is exact mess. It seems to be like somebody put it there to be like “ah, of course, this seems just somewhat odd.” It is uncomplicated to be all far too mindful of Luca Guadagnino’s hand in this episode, to see the characters’ mess as something staged and inorganic.

Quiet scenes bookend the episode. There’s the 1st, a sprawling sport of paintball at a complicated in the woods. And then the last, the commander sending off Craig’s troop, a stark reminder about why specifically he wishes to spend the night time before reveling in loud, reckless fun. In the center, it’s all a furious frenzy. The paintball activity ends with a symphony of teen chaos, the people hurling issues at just about every other. The use of gradual-movement and the lovely score do flip the playfulness into something a lot more clever, but once again, it is nearly methodical in its rendering, more crafted than alive. Of course, this episode is immersive through, pretty much music movie-esque in its style and moods. And the deficiency of plot is not inherently undesirable. But it continue to feels like so considerably is missing from We Are Who We Are. Who are any of these people to on their own or to every other?

Danny, we’re knowledgeable, worships Craig on a god-like amount. That considerably has been crystal clear considering that the beginning, but there is nonetheless the fundamental question of why. Questions lurk beneath the surface area of significantly of the partnership dynamics, which are incredibly fluid and feral during the episode. Britney can make out with Sam. Craig strokes Caitlin’s hair tenderly, and she accuses him of going straightforward on her at paintball for the reason that he sees her as a female. Fraser can help Sam off the flooring, but Sam informs him that he’ll never like him. Sole aggressively corners and kisses Fraser. Fraser tells Caitlin who tells him to in no way do it again. Craig encourages Danny to dance with Valentina. Danny hooks up with two of Valentina’s good friends at after, fucks 1 on a couch in front of every person else. Enrico and Britney the two seem to be eager to get with any one. Everyone’s having naked, everyone’s having messy. In all of it although, there is not a great deal to latch onto in conditions of why these relationships are the way that they are or what truly holds the buddy team with each other or what everyone is essentially emotion or hoping not to sense.

In quick: A large amount is left unsaid. And some of that is totally intentional withholding. Sam is plainly disappointed by getting rid of Caitlin and by Craig and Valentina’s exhibit of newlywed bliss, but he is not seriously sure how to convey it, so his anger just spews out of him in every course. All people is repressing a little something. Every person is established to act like Craig isn’t about to get deployed—Craig incorporated. Britney nearly breaks the spell when, through a match of fact, she talks about one more soldier who tried using to destroy his possess wife. It’s a jarring disturbance to the temper, upsetting Danny specially. I hold utilizing the phrase feral, but it genuinely does experience like the most effective descriptor of the episode. The camerawork and transitions are pretty much manic. In 1 scene, the characters thrash their bodies all-around in an almost violent dance right before a sudden cut to another darker, quieter, sensual slow-dance scene. There is no inhibition to be found, and at periods, it is indeed electrifying to view.

The performances do strongly harness the mayhem that the episode is gunning for. Absolutely everyone brings their A-recreation to the occasion episode, in particular Spence Moore II, Ben Taylor, and Corey Knight, who all occupy much more of the narrative than regular. There’s substantially much less of a concentrate on Fraser and Caitlin listed here. It’s far more about the team as an amoeba. And though there isn’t a ton of character progress, there is lifestyle in these performances, each individual actor bringing specificity to their people. Francesca Scorsese surprises with a melodious interlude, singing “Soldier of Love” by Pearl Jam.

And although it’s electrifying to observe, it’s disturbing, way too. Fraser projectile vomits early on and then just retains heading like it is absolutely nothing. He typically displays really stressing conduct when he’s drinking, which is all the time, and it’s made even a lot more stressing by the point that no a person would seem to treatment or observe. He spends a chunk of time horizontally sprawled on a sofa, hardly capable to keep his eyes open. Caitlin strokes his hair, but is anyone truly caring for him? And which is wherever We Are Who We Are occasionally gets bewildering in exactly what it’s trying to convey about this close friend team. There is a phony perception of intimacy during the social gathering sequences. Everybody is sexually liberated and all around each individual other, and but there’s no genuine closeness to be found. There is a hollowness to it all that sucks so much lifestyle out of the sequences.

They take in spaghetti with their hands. They cling on each individual other, drape their bodies across the ground and on couches, spill into each individual other. But is it actually intimacy? Is this definitely a team of friends who like and treatment for every other? I’m not certain, and I’m not sure if the ambivalence is the point or if it all just will come down to a lack of character development. Valentina is barely a sketch of a character, and although Craig’s willingness to marry immediately can make feeling, she’s just generally here as a gorgeous cipher. We Are Who We Are romanticizes teenager mess in a way that sometimes eschews the true mess of it all. It is dysfunction rendered as carefree pleasurable. The hedonism is scintillating, but it is also finally vacant.

Stray observations

  • I’m not always convinced that these teenagers would listen to the music the episode has them listen to, but I could be erroneous.
  • Craig does seem like a good guy, but I even now don’t definitely have an understanding of why absolutely everyone loves him SO considerably. But I guess which is somewhat reasonable…specific people today get elevated to god standing when you’re younger.
  • Fraser’s marriage glimpse is extremely fantastic.
  • I know I’m old because I couldn’t halt pondering about how upsetting it would be to occur home to that residence!!!!!!!!
