The mom of a U.S. Naval Academy football prospect was hit and killed by stray gunfire while she was on a lodge patio in Maryland, authorities mentioned.
Michelle Jordan Cummings, 57, of Houston, Texas, was struck by random bullets just soon after midnight Tuesday as she sat on the balcony at the Graduate Resort in Annapolis, in accordance to law enforcement. Cummings and her husband had been traveling to the metropolis to assist their son settle into the faculty, NBC Washington documented.
Officers and medics supplied emergency support, but Cummings was pronounced dead at the hotel.
Police claimed they think the gunfire happened a block away on Nice Avenue. Investigators have not determined a suspect in the shooting.
“What turned out to be a celebratory event … turned into a tragic function,” Annapolis Law enforcement Main Edward Jackson claimed.
Cummings’ son was scheduled to be inducted as an incoming plebe Wednesday night time, in accordance to NBC Washington, which noted he prepared to go through with the ceremony.
In a statement to NBC News on Tuesday, the U.S. Naval Academy described Michelle as the “happy mom of Midshipman Candidate Leonard Cummings III, a 2021 graduate of the Naval Academy Preparatory Faculty in Newport, R.I., and incoming plebe (freshman) for the Naval Academy Class of 2025.”
Sean Buck, the school’s superintendent vice admiral, offered his condolences to the Cummings spouse and children.
Authorities are presenting a blended $20,000 reward for data major to a suspect.
